Woman from Netflix’s ‘Indian Matchmaking’ laid off by Meta

Meta fired Surbhi Gupta, an engineer from India who had worked as a product manager in the USA since 2009. Netflix has also cast Gupta in its popular show ‘Indian Matchmaking’. She was one of thousands recently laid off by Meta as part of the company’s mass layoff plan. Gupta admits that he will face difficulty in finding another job as there is a slowdown in terms of new hires by companies.

Surbhi Gupta, former winner of the 2018 beauty pageant ‘Miss India-California’, explained these recent events to them. BBC And this move by Meta was not expected. One morning she received a mail regarding layoff proceedings and was later denied access to the computer and office gym. She reiterated that the whole incident felt like a breakup and told the BBC that it took her more than fifteen years to build her life in the United States. “It felt like the Titanic was sinking because one by one I was losing access to the workplace, then email, then laptops,” she added.

However, Meta did not ask Gupta to leave the office immediately. Her last day at the office will be in January. That being said, Gupta has an H1-B visa so the real task is to find another job as soon as possible, which means she can’t stay in the US for more than 60 days after leaving Meta. And like Gupta, there are thousands of Indians in the United States who are in a similar situation.

But why are big tech companies like Meta, Twitter, and Amazon getting fired? Let’s see.

Why are tech companies laying off their employees?

Meta laid off nearly 11,000 employees last month, or 13 percent of its total workforce. Meta is not the only one doing this as Twitter, Amazon, BYJUs and many other companies have already laid off thousands of employees or are on the verge of laying them off.

The reasons behind these layoffs vary, but there is a common ground. During the pandemic, these companies have undertaken heavy hiring as they expect growth in their businesses. However, as things slowly returned to normal, these tech companies did not receive the expected profits and investments. And as a result, they are now forced to cut their losses and laying off employees is one way. Another potential reason behind layoffs is the forecast of a recession in 2023.
