Techno, a subsidiary of Transition Holdings Used new Phantom X2, X2 Pro, and X2 Pro 5G Eco-Friendly Edition smartphones, at a global launch event in Dubai. Eco-friendly edition is a special version Phantom X2 Pro Made using recycled materials reclaimed from the oceans, with an eco-friendly back cover. The X2 and X2 Pro handsets, the company’s flagship offerings, have many upgrades over the original Phantom X that was launched in India back in April. The new Phantom X2 series smartphones look similar, but it’s a Pro model that has better photography capabilities, at least on paper, compared to the vanilla X2.

Tecno Phantom X2 and X2 Pro India prices are yet to be announced, but the handsets are all set to hit the country early this month. Here’s an unboxing and my first impressions of the Phantom X2 and X2 Pro after spending some time with the smartphones at the event.

Tecno Phantom X2 and X2 Pro: Unboxing

The devices come in flat square-shaped boxes that, apart from the phones, are packed with a USB Type-A to C cable, a 45W fast charging brick, wired earphones with a Type-C jack, a SIM-ejector pin and the usual documentation. The packaging is fully recyclable.

Design-wise, the Phantom X2 and X2 Pro are not very different from each other. Both devices feature curved screens with a 3.5D lunar crater design. The latter adds texture to the phones back cover, which looks premium and provides a good in-hand feel. The design also keeps smudges and fingerprints at bay. When moving, the edges of the handsets taper off to the side, offering a sleek curve and a comfortable grip. The phones have a volume rocker and power button on the right spine, a USB Type-C port is at the bottom, sandwiched between a speaker grill and a SIM ejector tray, which has slots for dual nano SIMs. The smartphones do not have a microSD card slot to further expand the storage. As for color options, tHe got the vanilla model Stardust Gray and Moonlight Silver As for the color options, however, the Pro variant can be bought in Mars Orange (made from recycled plastic) and Stardust Grey.

The rear panel of the smartphones has a camera island with huge sensors and LED flash. The Pro model has an orange ring around the main sensor, which is ever so slightly forward to deliver portrait shots at 2.5x. It was the “world’s first” smartphone with a retractable camera module. The module takes a second or two to retract, and according to the company, it’s dust-resistant and can withstand minor drops. The phone isn’t IP-rated, and there’s no word yet on the number of folding cycles the sensor can survive. For security the fingerprint scanner is placed below the tall punch-hole screens of the Tecno Phantom X2 and X2 Pro.

Speaking of which, the Tecno Phantom X2 series sports a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution (1,080 x 2,400p), 120Hz refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling rate. It also supports P3 wide color gamut, 8+2Bit display, CNC middle frame, military grade anti-glare glass and TUV SUD 36-month display fluency. The handsets also feature Corning Gorilla Victus protection to prevent damage from accidental drops. I couldn’t test the phone’s AMOLED panel outside under sunlight, but indoors, the panel looks good. It was very responsive and offered good viewing angles. Furthermore, the display can be locked at 120Hz / 60Hz refresh rate or adjusted according to the content played on the screen to save some battery.

At the core of the handsets is the flagship MediaTek Dimension 9000 SoC, which has a 4nm manufacturing process and is 5G capable. The SoC is rated to deliver exceptional power efficiency and an incredibly smooth user experience. Although the Dimensity 9000 is a capable chipset, I wanted to put it through its paces on the Tecno Phantom X2 and C2 Pro and see how well it performs in daily use and gaming. The smartphones also pack a vapor chamber cooling system to keep their thermals in check under extreme loads. In terms of configuration, the Tecno Phantom X2 has 8GB RAM + 256GB USB 3.1 flash storage, while the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is equipped with 12GB RAM + USB 3.1 flash 256GB storage. As mentioned above, the storage is not expandable, but the RAM can be expanded up to 5GB using a fraction of the handset’s storage.

The portrait lens on the X2 Pro also protrudes/pops out at the back to offer f/1.49 aperture, 65mm focal length and 18.9cm depth of field at 2.5x zoom. For selfies and video calling, the handsets have a 32MP snapper in a punch-hole setup. Software-wise, the Tecno Phantom X2 and X2 Pro run on Android 12-based HiOS 12.0 skin out of the box. The OS is a bit dated, but the good thing is that the company has it Partnership with Google For software updates and phones can get Android 13 update through OTA update.
