iPhone 14 Pro, Pro Max shortage: Indian government takes it up with Apple

[ad_1]

Where does the iPhone 14 stand in India’s consumer demand?

Interestingly, Apple continues to hold a minor share in the Indian smartphone market. According to industry reports, Apple has captured 4 percent market share among all original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the country. The company does not operate its business in the budget smartphone segments, which contribute to the bulk of phone sales in India.

However, the demand for Apple’s iPhones has steadily increased along with the increase in average selling price (ASP) of smartphones in India. A Mint report puts the current ASP of the smartphone at around Rs. 20,000 – at the end of the recently concluded first round of festive sales.

The iPhone 13 has seen huge demand thanks to steep discounts, Apple’s smartphones are more expensive than India’s smartphone ASP. For reference, iPhone 14 in India is priced at Rs. 79,900 – almost 4x the smartphone ASP in the country.

Although Apple’s affiliated contract manufacturers, including Foxconn, Wistron Corp and Pegatron, have set up factories in India, it remains to be seen whether the pace of production will keep up with growing market demand. Many of these facilities contribute to Apple’s global supply chain, and not just India — as the company seeks to expand its supply chain beyond China.
