Plus Points:

Superstar Rajinikanth is seen in a strong role after a long time. His characterization is well designed by Nelson. Rajinikanth underperforms for most of the first half and turns into a formidable force as the film progresses. It’s brilliantly presented and the interval block is great.

Rajinikanth’s comedy timing was used well in Jailer and his scenes with Yogi Babu were laughable. The dark comedy did a good job in the first hour. The entertainment was enjoyable especially during the action set pieces.

Anirudh is the second pillar of Jailer after Rajinikanth. He elevates Superstar to his best with his peppy background score. Especially the Hukum song and the interval sequence sounded amazing, thanks to the background score by Anirudh. Ramyakrishna, Marna Menon, Vinayakan and Vasanth Ravi are perfect in their roles.

Negative Points:

Jailer suffers from a very weak plot and as a result the second half is poor. The first part was attractive due to Rajni’s comedy and stagecraft, but the second part failed to maintain the same momentum. In order to entertain in the second hour of the film, the director resorted to some comedy tracks, which did not work.

Sunil’s characterization, Tamannaah’s portions did not give much value to the film. As the story is weak, the action blocks fail to provide the much-needed adrenaline rush. The film is weak on the emotional front and the twist at the end is also nothing special.

The movie is too long and it is difficult to stand for the second hour because of the drawn out scenes. The much hyped cameos of Siva Rajkumar and Mohanlal didn’t make much of an impact and lacked the wow factor. Jackie Shroff appeared in a small role.

Technical aspects:

As mentioned earlier, Anirudh acted brilliantly. His background score served to elevate certain scenes. Cinematography by Vijay Karthik is good. Production values are solid. The editing team should have cut some scenes in the second part.

Talking about director Nelson Dilipkumar, he didn’t do much in the movie. He portrays Rajini brilliantly, but his script lacks substance. Although the first part was handled well, the second part was poorly written and left a big loss. The movie would have been better if the director had paid more attention to the script.

Decision:

All in all, Jailer is a partially engrossing action drama, mainly due to Rajinikanth’s performance and style. The superstar does a great job in his role and the first half of the movie is decent. But Jailer suffers from a very thin plot and the second half comes off like a house of cards. Hence Jailer becomes just a good watch and you are advised to keep your expectations in check.
