A tweet by the Mumbai police has warned users about new scammers who are tricking people by offering guides to switch to 5G. The tweet comes as a warning to people not to fall prey to such scams and never share their personal or banking information or click on unknown links.
In a graphic shared in a tweet, the Mumbai Police claimed that the scammers are posing as executives from established phone service companies and will help you upgrade from 4G to 5G. Mumbai Police said scammers pressure people to share personal and banking details through unknown links.
Mumbai Police’s warning comes after several other cyber security units of police in various states have already warned users of similar scams. Earlier, the Hyderabad Cyberabad (Cyber Crime Branch) department issued a warning on Twitter. In a tweet in Telugu, the unit said, “Cyber fraudsters are sending links in the name of 5G. If you open the link, there is a risk of hacking the phone. Danger is inevitable if not alert. Accounts are being emptied by sending links to upgrade from 4G to 5G SIM. Hyderabad Police said that they are sending links with the names of the respective telecom companies.
Separately, the Gurugram police department has also issued a warning against 5G scammers. In a report, the department asked residents not to share their OTPs with any telecaller as they may wipe out bank accounts in the process. Since the news of the 5G rollout in Gurugram, the number of these incidents has increased. However, we ask residents to be vigilant and not share OTPs with anyone.
Reports suggest that the scammers’ modus operandi remains the same. They impersonate executives from leading telcos and guide people to switch to 5G SIM. However, in the process, they send OTPs or links to users, which can give scammers access to their device or bank accounts.
